Rohingya (Ruáingga / رُاَينڠَ)

Rohingya is an eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken in northern Rakhine State (Arakan) in Burma / Myanmar and in the neighbouring Chiittagong Division of Bangladesh. There are about 1.8 million speakers.

Rohingya was first written with a version of the Arabic alphabet during the 19th century. Between 1826-1948 when Arakan was administered by the British, English and Urdu were the main written languages used. In 1975 a new orthography based on the Arabic alphabet was developed, and also another based on the Urdu alphabet. In the 1980s a new script for Rohingya, known as Hanifi, was created by Mohammad Hanif and colleagues.
