Chelkan (куу / чалканду)

Chelkan is a a Northern Altai language spoken in Turachakskiy and Choyskiy districts of Altai Republic in southern Russia. Chelkan was considered a dialect of Altai, however it now classified and recognised as a separate language. According to the 2010 census, about 2,000 people speak Chelkan.

Chelkan was first documented in the 1860s by V.V. Radlov. Other studies of the language were undertaken during the 20th century. However, the language remained an oral one until the 21st century. The first book in Chelkan, a textbook for children, was pubished in 2004. A dictionary has also been published.
