Kumaoni (कुमाऊँनी)

Kumaoni is a Central Pahari language spoken mainly in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state in northern India. In 2011 there were about 2 million speakers of Kumaoni, which is also known as Kamaoni, Kumau, Kumauni, Kumawani, Kumgoni, Kumman and Kunayaoni. It is closely related to Garhwali and Nepali.

Dialects of Kumaoni include Central Kumaoni, Northeastern Kumaoni, Southeastern Kumaoni and Western Kumaoni. Kumaoni is written with the Devanagari script. In the past it was written with the Gupta and Takri alphabets. It is used to in literature, periodicals, folk songs and on the radio.

दूतल मरियमक पास ऐबेर कौ, “ओ मरियम, परमेश्वरकि किरपा तुमिं है रै!” मरियमल सोचौ, “यौ को छु, और यौ कसि किरपा छु?” तब परमेश्वरक दूतल कौ, डर झन, देख, तु अङ-भारि हबेर एक च्यल कैं जनम देलि, और तु उनर नाम यीशु धरिये।

Transliteration

Dūtal Mariyamak pās aiber kau, "O Mariyam, parmeśwarki kirpā tumiṅ hai rai!" Mariyamal socau, "Yau ko chu, aur yau kasi kirpā chu?" Tab parmeśwarak dūtal kau, ḍar jhan, dekh, tu aṅ-bhāri haber ek cyal kaeṅ janam deli, aur tu unar nām jīshu dhariye.

Translation

28. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among a  women. 29. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this shouldbe. 30. And the angel said unto her,  Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31. And, behold, thou *shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name  Jesus.
