Rajbanshi (राजबंशी)

Rajbanshi is a member of the Bengali-Assamese branch of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is spoken by about 168,300 people mainly in southeastern Nepal, particularly in the Jhapa and Morang districts of Province No. 1. There are also some speakers of Rajbanshi in Bihar and West Bengal in the northeast of India.

Rajbanshi is also known as Gangai, Koch, Koche, Rajbangsi, Rājbanshi, Rajbansi or Tajpuria. Dialects include Western Rajbanshi, Eastern Rajbanshi and Central Rajbanshi. They are all more or less mutually intelligible.

Rajbanshi is written with the Devanāgarī alphabet. It is taught in primary schools, and used in literature, newspapers and other media. It is classified as a language of a recognized indigenous nationality in Nepal.
