Dhundari (ढूंढाड़ी)

Dhundari is a member of the Rajasthani branch of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is spoken in the Dhundhar region of Rajasthan state in the northeast of India, specifically in the districts of Jaipur, Karauli, Hindaun, Sawai Madhopur, Dausa and Tonk. In 2011 there were about 1.48 million speakers of Dhundari, which is also known as Dhundari-Marwari, Jaipuri or Marwari.

Dhundari can be written with the Devanagari alphabet, although it is rarely used in writing. It has no official status in India, and is considered a dialect of Rajasthani. It is not used in schools, but is widely spoken, especially in and around Jaipur.

एक जणा-कै दो बेटा छा। वाँ-मेँ-सू छोटक्यो आप-का बाप-नै खै दादा-जी धन-मैँ-सू जो बाँटो म्हारै बाँटै आवै सो मूँ-नै द्यो। वो आप-को धन वाँ-नै बाँट दीनू। थोड़ा-ई दिना पाछै छोटक्यो बेटो सब सोर-समेटर दूर परदेस-मैँ चळ्यो-गयो अर ऊँदै कुग्गैलाँ चालर आप-को। धन उड़ा-दीनू।

Transliteration

Ek janā-kai dō bēṭā chhā. Wāṅ-maiṅ-sūṅ chhōtakyō āp-kā bāp-nāi khaī, 'dādā-jī, dhan-maiṅ-sūṅ jō bāṅṭō mhārai bāṅtai āwwi, so mūṅ-nai dui.' Wo āp-ko dhan wāṅ-nai bāṅt-dinu. Thōṛā-ī dinā pāchhai chhōtkyō bēto sab sōr-samētar dūr par-dēs-maiṅ chaḷyō-gayō, ar ūṅdai kuggailāṅ chālar āp-kō. Dhan uṛa-dinū.

Translation

A man-to two sons were. Them-among-from by-the-younger his-own father-to it-was-said, 'O father, wealth-among, from what share my in-share comes, that me-to give.' He his-own wealth them-to divided. A-few-indeed days after younger son all gathering far foreign-country-into went-away, and there in-evil-ways walking his-own wealth was-wasted-away.
