Chhattisgarhi (छत्तीसगढ़ी‎)

Chhattisgarhi is a member of the Eastern Hindi branch of the Indo-Ayran language family spoken in the east-central India by about 16 million people. It is spoken mainly in north central Chhattisgarh state, and also in nearby parts of Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha states.

In Odisha Chhattisgarhi is known as ଲରିଆ (lariā) or ଛତିଶଗଡ଼ି (chatiśagaḍi). It is known as Khaltahi among the hill-people of Chhattisgarh.

The Indian government classifies Chhattisgarhi as an eastern dialect of Hindi, while others view it as a separate language. It is closely related to Awadhi, Bagheli and Odia.

Chhattisgarhi is written with the Devanagari alphabet, and is used in literature, the media and films. It used to be written with the Odia script as well.
