Bagvalal (къIaваннаб мицци)

Bagvalal is member of the Avar-Andic branch of the Northeast Caucasian languages spoken in Dagestan in the Russian Federation by about 6,500 people. Bagvalal speakers, who call themselves Багвал (Bagwal), live along the right bank of the river Andi-Koisu and in the surrounding hills near the border with Georgian.

Bagvalal is used mainly within families, while Avar is used elsewhere. It contains many words borrowed from Arabic, Russian, Turkish and Avar, and is rarely written.

Translation

One man had three sons and one donkey. Dying, he (man) bequeathed: let (that) donkey go to the laziest son. After the death of his father because of the (division) of the donkey, they argued (and) went to the judge and each (of them) told him about his laziness. The oldest (brother) said: "If I'm even thirsty, lazy, I won't go to drink water." The middle (brother) said: "Even sailing across the river, if I'm thirsty, I won't drink lazy." The youngest (brother) stood in silence. The judge asked the younger one, "Why aren't you talking?" He hardly answered the judge: "I'm too lazy to talk." Having proved the laziness of his younger brother, (the judge) left him a donkey.
