Buryat is a Mongolic language spoken by about 400,000 people mainly in the Republic of Buryatia, Ust-Ordyn and Aginsk autonomic districts of the Russian Federation, and also in northern Mongolia and northwestern China.
A method of writing Buryat using the Cyrillic alphabet was created after the 1917 Russian Revolution. Before that, the Buryats wrote in Traditional Mongolian script. In 1931 a version of the Latin alphabet was adopted to write Buryat, then in 1939 the Cyrillic alphabet was re-introduced.
