Tat (зугьун тати / zuhun tati)

Tat is a Southwest Iranian language spoken mainly in Azerbaijan, and also in Iran and Russia. In 2011 there were about 22,800 Tat speakers in Azerbaijan, mainly in the Balakan district of the Surakhan region. This figure includes speakers of Juhuri / Judeo-Tat. There are about 8,000 Tat speakers in Gilan and Qazvin provinces of Iran, and in 2010 there were about 2,000 Tat speakers in the Dagestan Autonomous Republic in Russia.

Tat is also known as Muslim Tat, Mussulman Tati or Tati. It is closely related to Judeo-Tat, although the two languages are not entirely mutually intelligible.

In Azerbaijan and Iran Tat is taught in some primary schools. Tat is spoken mainly by adults and some children, however there is a shift towards Azerbaijani.
