Khinalug is a Northeast Caucasian language spoken in the villages of Khinalug (Xınalıq / Kətş) and Gülüstan in the Quba Rayon mountains of northern Azerbaijan. In 2007 there were about 1,000 Khinalug speakers. It is not closely related to any other langugage as it forms its own branch of the Northeast Caucasian language family.
Khinalug is also written Khinalig, Xinalug(h) or Khinalugh. There are a number of ways to write it with the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. In the late 20th century the poet Rahim Alxas adapted the Lezgian Cyrillic alphabet to write Khinalug, and published books of poety and some school textbooks. A team at Moscow University devised a way to write Khinlug based on the Latin alphabet for Azeri in 2007.
