Hoava is member of the Northwest Solomonic branch of the Oceanic group of Malayo-Polynesian languages. It is spoken by about 460 people mainly on New Georgia island and in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands, and also in Marovo Lagoon in the same province.
Hoava is considered a dialect of Hoava-Kusaghe. Many Hoava speakers also speak English, Roviana, Marovo and Solomon Islands Pijin. Hoava is written with the Latin alphabet.
The /ŋ/ sound is also written ṉ.
