Sobei is a member of the Sarmi group of Western Oceanic languages. It is spoken by about 1,000 people in the Sarmi Regency in Papua Province in eastern Indonesian. Specifically, it is spoken in the villages of Sarmi, Sawar, and Bagaiserwar on the north coast of Sarmi Regency.
Sobei is also known as Sobey or Sarmi Sobei. It is closely related to Isirawa, Armati and Liki, which are spoken in nearby areas. Sobei is written with the Latin alphabet. The language is considered endangered, and efforts are being made to revitalize it and encourage its use in daily life.
