Lehali (Loli)

Lehali is a member of the Southern Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 200 people on the west coast of Ureparapara Island in Torba Province in northern Vanuatu.

Lehali is also known as Teqel or Tehali. Native speakers call it Loli and they call Ureparapara Island Noypēypay. It was first documented in 1885 by Robert Codrington (1830-1922), an English missionary and linguist. He called it Retan, and classified it as a dialect of a single language, along with Löyöp, which is spoken on the east coast of Ureparapara.
