Namakura (Namakir)

Namakura is a member of the Southern Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 3,800 people in the Shepherd Islands in Shefa Province of Vanuatu, particularly on the islands of Makura, Mataso, Tongariki, Tongoa and Buninga. Each of these islands has its own dialect of the language. It is also spoken on the islands of Efate and Emae.

Namakura is also known as Namakir, Namakouran, Makura or Makoura. It is written with the Latin alphabet using an orthography developed by the Rev. Oscar Michelsen and the Rev. Peter Milne in the 1920s.
