Yabem is a member of the Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family spoken by about 2,100 people on the southern tip of the Huon Peninsula in Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea.
Yabem is also known as Laulabu, Jabem, Jabêm, Jabim, Yabim and Yabêm.
Yabem was first written by German Lutheran missionaries in 1885. They created an orthography and set up a school system using Yabem as the medium of instruction. Translations of religious and other works were made into Yabem, and original literary works were also written, as well as grammars and dictionaries.
Since the 1950s Yabem has been largely replaced by Tok Pisin and English in education and formal usage.
