Lakon is a member of the Southern Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 800 people around Lakona Bay on the west coast of Gaua Island, one of the Banks Islands in Torba Province in northern Vanuatu.
Lakon is also known as Lakona, Gaua, Gog, Vura or Vurē. There are four dialects: Qatareu (Qätärew), Vure (Vurē), Toglatareu and Togla.
There are ways to write Lakon with the Latin alphabet. A Lakon translation of the Book of Common Prayer was published in 1897. There are also a few other publications in the language, such as a collection of traditional stories published between 2003 and 2011.
