Papapana

Papapana is a member of the Northwest Solomonic group of the Western Oceanic branch of the Malayo-Polynesian language family, It is spoken by about 120 people in the villages of Teperoi, Peuni, Koikoi, Maras, Barora and Iraka on the east coast of Bougainville Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.

Papapana is considered highly endangered with only about 17% of the Papapana people speaking it. There is a shift to Tok Pisin among many Papapana people, particularly those under 40, and few parents pass the language on to their children. It is taught to a limited extent in schools.

There is very little written material in or about Papapana. A grammar of the language was published in 2020, and contains the orthography shown below. There is also a Papapana dictionary.
