Lambya (Ichilambya)

Lambya is a Bantu language spoken in parts of Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia. There are about 59,500 Lambya speakers in the Chitipa and Karonga districts of northern Malawi. There are about 30,400 speakers of Lambya in the Ileje district of the Mbeya region in the southwest of Tanzania, and about 17,000 in the Isoka district of Muchinga province in the northeast of Zambia.

Lambya is also known as Kilambya, Lambia, Lambwa or Rambia. Speakers of Lambya call their language Ichilambya or ChiLambya. There are three main dialects: Cilambya, Cindali and Cisukwa.

Mukaya mukaŵa izala. Po Ufulu akaya pakulaŵa ivyakulya ku ŵanthu. Nanthi ŵamupa ivyakulya vila akapotwagha ukuyamula chifukwa chakuti mupimpha. Chifukwa chinicho akapinyilira isaka kulukusa ulutali leka, lo akivwalika munsingo. Nanthi anda pakwenda isaka lira likamukonkhe zyanga munyumwa mwache.

Translation

In the village there was a famine. So Tortoise went to beg food from people. When they gave him that food he wasn't able to carry it because he was short. For this reason he tied a sack to a very long rope and wore it round his neck. As he was walking along that sack was following behind him.
