Bhaca (isiBhaca)

Bhaca is a Southern Bantu language with about 500,000 speakers in the northeast of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. It is spoken mainly in Mount Frere (KwaBhaca), and also in Ixopo, Umzimkhulu and Bulwer. Traditionally it is considered a dialect of Swati, however it is closer to Zulu, Phuthi and Xhosa.

Bhaca is also known as Baca, and Bhaca speakers call it isiBhaca. It is written with the Latin script. Bhaca people call themselves amaBhaca, and there are about 1 million of them. Half of them live in KwaZulu Natal Province and mainly speak Zulu, which is the main language of that region, while many of them in Eastern Cape Province speak Bhaca, even though they are taught in Xhosa at school.
