Nyakyusa is a member of the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo language family. It is spoken by about 1.4 million people around the northern end of Lake Malawi in southern Tanzania and northern Malawi. In Tanzania Nyakyusa is spoken by about 1.2 million people in the Kyela and Rungwe districts or the Mbeya region, and in the Makete district of the Njombe region. In Malawi there are about 149,000 speakers of Nyakyusa in the Chitipa and Karonga districts.
Nyakyusa is also known as Nyakyusa-Ngonde, Ikingonde, Ikinyakyusa, Ikinyikiusa, Ikinyikyusa, Kinyakyusa, Kinyakyusa-Ngonde, Konde, Mombe, Ngonde, Nkonde, Nyakusa, Nyakyusa, Nyekyosa, or Nyikyusa. Dialects include Nyakyusa, Kukwe, Mwamba, Ngonde and Selya.
Nyakyusa can be written with the Latin alphabet, and there are several different spelling systems. Literacy in Nyakyusa is promoted by SIL, who have produced translations of the Bible and other texts.
