Makaa (mǝ́kaá)

Makaa is Bantu language spoken by about 80,000 Makaa people in the Meka area in the southeast of Cameroon. In particular it is spoken in the communes of Abong-Mbang, Bebeng, Mbouang, Doumatang and Nguelemendouka in the north of the Haut-Nyong department in the East Province.

Makaa is also known as Maka, Meka, South Makaa or South Mekaa. Dialects of Makaa include Bésáp (Bə́səp), Bébánde (Bəbə́nd) and Mbwas (Mbwaanz). It is closely related to, though not intelligible with, Byep (a.k.a. North Makaa), which is also spoken by the Makaa people.
