Doteli is a member of the North-Western branch of the Eastern Pahari group of Indo-Aryan languages. It is spoken by about 790,000 people, mainly in western Nepal, particularly in the Bajhang, Dadeldhura, Darchula, Doti, Kailali, and Kanchanpur districts of Sudurpashchim province. There are also some speakers of Doteli in the northern Indian states of Maharastra, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhan.
Doteli is also known as Dotyali (डोट्याली) or Dotali. The main dialects are Baitadeli, Bajhangi Nepali, Darchuli and Doteli. It is used in literature and the media, and has the status in Nepal of the language of recognized indigenous nationality.
Doteli is written with the Devanagari alphabet.
