Khortha is a Bihari language spoken in the north of the state of Jharkhand in the northeast of India by about 8 million people. It is spoken mainly in the divisions of North Chotanagpur and Santhal Pargana, and is used as a lingua franca between different linguistic communities.
Khortha is also known as Kortha, Khotta or Eastern Magahi, and is considered by some as a dialect of Magahi, Maithili or Hindi. Khortha is the second most spoken language in Jharkhand after Hindi.
There is a rich oral literature in Khortha consisting of a varieties of songs, stories and poems. However, the language is rarely written.
