Gondi is a group of South-Central Dravidian languages spoken mainly in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. There are three main Gondi languages: Adilabad Gondi, Aheri Gondi and Northern Gondi, which have about 2.9 speakers between them.
Adilabad Gondi (కోయంగ్ / గోండి) is spoken in the Chandrapur, Nanded, and Yavatmal districts of Maharshtra state, and in Adilabad, Karimnagar and Warrangal districts of Telangana state. In 2015 there were about 300,000 speakers of Adilabad Gondi, and it is normally written with the Telugu alphabet.
Aheri Gondi (कोयम / गोंडी) is spoken in Gadchiroli district of Maharshtra state, and in Adilabad district of Telangana state. In 2015 there were about 150,000 speakers of Aheri Gondi, and it is normally written with the Devanagari alphabet.
Northern Gondi is spoken in Balaghat, Betul, Chhindwara, Mandla and Seoni districts of Madhya Pradesh state, and in Amravati, Bhandara, Nagpur, Wardha and Yavatmal districts districts of Maharashtra state. In 1997 there were about 1.9 million speakers of Aheri Gondi, and it is normally written with the Devanagari alphabet.
There is a rich oral tradition in Gondi, but little written material. When written, the Devanagari or Telugu scripts are generally used for Gondi, while the Masaram Gondi script, which was created by Munshi Mangal Singh Masaram of Madhya Pradesh in 1918, is sometimes used.
The Gunjala Gondi was recently rediscovered by researchers at the University of Hyderabad. Manuscripts in this script dating from the mid-18th century were found in Gunjala, a village in Adilabad district of Telangana. Efforts are being made to promote its revival and use, particularly in northern Andhra Pradesh.
Another script for Gondi, known as the Gond alphabet, was devised in 2010 by Professor Prasanna Sree of Andhra University.
