Lhowa is a member of the Central Bodish branch of the Tibeto-Burman language family. It is spoken by about 9,000 people in central Nepal, particularly in the municipalities of Bahargaun Muktikhsetra, Dalome and Lo Manthang in the Upper Mustang area in the Mustang District of Gandaki Province.
Lhowa is also known as Lowa, Lhopa, Lo Montang, Loba, Loke, Loket, Lopa, Loyu, Glo Skad (གློ་སྐད) or Mustangi. It is closely related to Baragaon, which is spoken in Lower Mustang.
Lhowa is usually written with the Devanagari alphabet, and can also be written with the Tibetan alphabet.
