Chambeali is a member of the North-Western branch of the Western Pahari group of Indo-Aryan languages. It is spoken by about 126,000 people in northern India, mainly in Chamba district in the northwest of Himachal Pradesh state, and also in Jammu and Kashmir state.
Chambeali is also known as Pahari (पहाड़ी), Himachali (हिमाचली), Cameali, Chamaya, Chambiali, Chambiyali, Chamiyali Pahari, Chamrali or Chamya. Dialects include Bansbali, Bansyari and Gadi Chameali. It is closely related to Kangri and other Western Pahari languages.
Chambeali is written with the Devanagari alphabet. In the past it was written with a version of the Takri script.
