Pangwali is a member of the North-Western branch of the Western Pahari group of Indo-Aryan languages. It is spoken by about 18,700 people in northern India, mainly in the township of Pangi in the Chamba district in the northwest of Himachal Pradesh state, and also in Jammu and Kashmir state.
Pangwali is also known as Pahari, Pangi or Pangwali Pahari. Dialects include Killar, Purthi, Sach and Dharwasi. It is closely related to Kullui, Mandeali, Chambeali and other Pahari languages.
Pangwali is written with the Devanagari alphabet. In the past it was written with a version of the Takri script.
