Vili is a Bantu language spoken by about 100,000 people mainly in the south of the Republic of the Congo, and also in southwestern Gabon, and Cabinda, a part of Angola. In particular, it is spoken in the departments of Kouliou, Pointe-Noire and Niari in Congo.
Vili is also known as Kivili, Tsivili, Tchvili or Tshvili. Vili speakers call their languages Civili and themselves Buvili (plural), M'vili (singular).
Vili was first written by Christophe Marichelle (1869-1929), a French missionary and dialectician who learned the language and published a grammar and dictionary. The first Vili person to write and publish material in Vili was Pierre Tchicaya de Boempire, who started writing it in 1937, and translated the Bible into Vili.
