Dumi (दुमी‎)

Dumi is a member of the Kiranti branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is spoken by about 3,520 people in eastern Nepal, particularly in Aiselukharka, Kepilasgadhi and Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi municipalities in the north of Khotang District of Province No. 1. It is spoken mainly by adults. Children are encouraged to use Nepali at school, and few parents pass the language on to their children.

Dumi is also known as Dumī Rāī, Dumi Bo’o, Dumi Bro, Hopupo Bro, Lsi Rai, Ro’do Bo’ or Sotmali. Dialects are Kharbari, Lamdija and Makpa.

Dumi is written with the Devanagari alphabet. There is some written material, including a dictionary and grammar.

ताम आजो देलगोभालबिम तुम. मयो आङु मालोकचुम ङा मोङु. मयो होपुआ मुनहनपोम तुम. मयो देलगोभाल आतासाबाम हेङा फयारहनपोम देसि गुमु मागथिङन. देलबि किमकिमबि जाराआ होपु-होपुआ ङा खानि पुना चहुकथिङु.

Transliteration

Tam ajho delgobhalbim tum. Mʌyo aŋu malokcum ŋa moŋu. Mʌyo hopua munhʌnpom tum. Mʌyo delgobhal atasabam heŋa phyarhʌnpom desi gumu magʌthiŋnʌ. Delbi kimkimbi jharaa hopu-hopua ŋa khani puna chukthiŋu.

Translation

This is the matter of the village in past. At that time, I was too young. It is the matter of doing ourselves. At that time, the ready-made clothes were not available in my village like these days. Everyone in the village had to weave the loom in every house.
